We invited a representative from Wells Fargo who came in and guided a student volunteer through the creation of their budget. Our representative prepared a budget template via Excel that we were then able to share with all attendants of the program. Once the student’s budget was complete, our representative ended with an impactful closing statement that emphasized the importance of maintaining financial health from a young age.
We had the pleasure of presenting on financial literacy during Alpha week of the Mu Tau Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha at UNCC. To match their NBA all star weekend theme, we created a fun, innovative form of financial jeopardy where each team had to answer our trivia questions then shoot basketballs into small hoops in order to receive the points. We included a few basketball trivia questions with our financial knowledge to cater to the theme.
We covered the basics of debt management and different forms of debt. We then helped our audience understand the importance of establishing credit and being able to understand your credit score. We showed different student credit cards with affordable rates that would be good for first time credit users. We then finished with a Q&A with a campus financial officer giving students a chance to understand more about student loans and their payment process.
We opened with an icebreaker inviting everyone to join in deep thought of recent financial situations they have been in which costed them greatly. We brainstormed different ways to cut down these costs as a group for future purposes. We then went into an exciting, high-energy game of financial jeopardy which engaged and educated our members immensely as they battled for first place. Our members left with newfound knowledge and a thirst for more financial knowledge.
This panel event informed inquisitive young scholars about how to responsibly get into investing as a college student. Our panel consisted of five individuals who specialized in different fields of investing, including a registered representative, a financial advisor, a venture capitalist, and a real estate specialist. We briefly covered topics ranging from the stock market, to real estate, all the way to angel investing and insurance. Students were able to ask questions and network with the panelists following the panel.
The Resident Student Association invited us to present during one of their meetings to educate their residents on the topic of financial literacy. We conducted a lively game of Financial Jeopardy for the attendants where they were able to learn and have fun. The Jeopardy game covered topics ranging from budgeting all the way to compounding interest. Financial Jeopardy was followed by a brief Q&A session where students asked further questions about things like bonds and budgeting tips.
We got the chance to host two wealth managers from Wells Fargo who shared personal case studies and explored multiple college funding options. The case study clients ranged from excellent financial health to poor financial health situations. Following the cases, attendants also received multiple online resources to help find financial aid as well as other financial resources useful for college students.
We were able to partner with Worth Advisors for this amazing, creative event. During the event, we were presented with a mind-blowing breakdown of lyrics from Jay-Z’s album 444 that all pertained directly to financial literacy. The lyrics were played then led to in-depth descriptions and discussions. The presentation made for a wonderful evening combining relevant music and knowledge to our generation.
We felt knowing how to write a check is a fundamental skill that many millenials are not educated on growing up. They will need to write checks for their rent, organizations, businesses, and other important situations. To ensure they were aware and polished on this skill, we set up a table in the union with laminated checks and dry erase markers. We challenged students passing by to learn or prove their check writing abilities.
We were given the wonderful opportunity by Ms. Raven Solomon to be the opening performance at one of her Leadership & Professional Development for Interns (LPDI) Summer Series sessions. We allowed interns from around the greater Charlotte community to participate in an engaging icebreaker and a fun, informational game of Financial Jeopardy. We were followed by a magnificent pair of financial experts who gave several key gems.
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity asked us to help them prepare a presentation on Blockchain and Cryptocurrency. This marked our first presentation as an organization. We began by explaining Blockchain technology, the key component to all cryptocurrencies. Following that, we spoke more about what exactly a cryptocurrency is, as well as how to read the charts at a foundational level.
We were allowed the opportunity to have a spot as a small session at the Inaugural Charlotte Teen Summit by the 100 Black Men of Greater Charlotte. We engaged a group of 13-18 year olds in a session of Financial Jeopardy which got them interested in the topic of financial literacy and filled them with a new thirst for knowledge about their finances.
Mr. Chris Elmore of AvidXchange, a local billion dollar startup out of the Charlotte area, asked us to present with the interns working there over the summer. We sharpened up our Financial Jeopardy game and brought a mini basketball goal and ball to give the interns a shot at earning bonus points!
